You might know the film THE WRAITH for a bunch of reasons. I did, due to it being the film made by Charlie Sheen just before he shipped off to the Philippines for the shooting of PLATOON. Others know it for being a good, bad movie (a concept I do not really buy into). Aside from Sheen, Nick Cassavetes, Sherilyn Fenn, and Randy Quaid all star in this supernatural revenge thriller. When glowing orbs crash into the Arizona desert, they leave in their wake a black Dodge Turbo Interceptor that is from hell. The following day Jake (Sheen) appears in the town of Brooks, catching the eye of Keri (Fenn). She has a problem with gang leader and scumbag Packard (Cassavetes). See he wants her and doesn’t care that she is not interested. He leads street racers that steal cars and cheat at life. When gang members start losing to Interceptor, with bloody finales, fear stalks the gang and the town.
So my review is simple, THE WRAITH is a functional film that is neither terrible nor terrific. The Vestron Video release on the other hand is excellent. Well bar the average transfer. The disc extras, in particular Marvin’s funny and insightful (as well as compassionate points about the dying crew member) is up there with the best commentaries. Rughead or Clint Howard interview is as charming as he is. Clint gets that the film is a trample of silliness but never lets that colour his judgement, My personal fave though are the stunt team interviews. Highlighting the perils of joy we get from stunts as well as the technical processes that make filming races so hard. The point about editing is also valuable.
