SPECIES 1 – 4 BLU RAY BOXSET

I want to take you back to A Long, Long, Long time ago. After the age where Aliens were evil menaces, coming for our souls (or other bits like the natural resources) like in INVADERS FROM MARS. Also after the age of the Extraterrestrial alien in ET and his home sick wanderer, that ended up in the worst place in the universe and was trying hard to get out of here. This was the age of the hybrid. When MEN IN BLACK were hunting alien immigrants and others were reanimating ALIEN RESURRECTIONS to bring forth even more monsterous kills. Another alien had its beginning. Living in the animated shell of a human. The first film helped it escaped from a secure location, hooped a train to the desert and then enter the city of angels… hungry for flesh.

SPECIES was it name…

A word of truth is that this first film, its sequal and about half of the third film are what makes this set worth owning. From the films alone to the art work on the box to the extras. Best Actor Oscar winner Ben Kingsley hams it up, Indy speared sidekick Alfred Molina is geeky cool and that stunning creature Natasha Henstridge who is Sil, a stunning creature…killer that is. She uses her body and its sexy delights to deliver death on every human that she meets… Thats part one. The film that fused CLOSE ENCOUNTERS with ALIEN by way of David Cronenberg body horror delights. Its success encouraged a run of sequels. Then second film is the first equal, with a space race story of an astronaut infected with alien DNA and like THE ASTRONAUTS WIFE, it brings a head to head with the first films killer Sil and an even more vicious monster. Part 3 and Part 4 are variations on a theme kind of. The last one is a steamer in many respects but thats an opinion and like butt holes, we all have one.

What is more important to you here is that this set brings to us. From Joel Robinson slipcase (if you get it before it turns into a digi pack and sucks). Then the films, they are returned to us in a series of pretty good transfers (part one and two are very good, the third has been restored to something above its station and the forth…well it works.) The best extra here is Kim Newman. He makes the film chew on its grissle and, through a far more interesting look at everything from Hammer to Hollywood of the 40s, he solidifys SPECIES as the best of the Quad. Peter Medak commentary on the second film is a highlight. His honesty and actual surprise at what they pull off is delightful. Also a little fun to be had as well. Dave Wain and Matty Budrewicz are becoming my favoured word talkers on films I dont like. They could make the phone book hold up as a varied piece of art and trash. Which is saying a lot….
