MadMapper Software Presentation & Launch Party
Projection mapping has been one of the fastest growing mediums in the world since it first started to be seen in 2008. Often reserved for the programming elite due to its complexity. This years Mapping Festival saw the launch of the latest piece of software… MadMapper that is aimed at bringing video mapping to a wider audience. It comes from the team behind Modul8 and 1024 Architecture.
In the build up to the official launch there were 4 workshop tutorials, giving everyone a sneak preview of what the new software looks like and how to use it correctly. The workshops covered everything from the basics through to mapping techniques onto people and even guerilla mapping. With only 15 participants in the workshop, places were at a premium, but all very reasonably priced at 150 CHF (about £115).
Previous to the showcase at the festival, several beta versions of the software had already distributed throughout the industry to people such as Laurent Garnier – the legendary French techno master – but this was the first time the public en masse were able to check out its potential.
The time had come, time to unveil MadMapper officially. The presentation hosted by Boris Edelstein (Modul8) and François Wunschel (1024 Architecture) took place in the Fonderie Kougler. With the main output setup on huge screen, they gave a brief overview of the MadMapper interface and how to connect your different inputs and outputs. They went on to show some examples of previous work, including ‘Tetra Tennis’.
They then continued to create some live examples and mapped onto a structure at the front of the stage, similar to the clip above. The audience were thrilled and amazed at the ease of use, and many could see instantly the potential that this software provides for the future. It is still in its infancy but already you can see it will have a big impact on the world of projection mapping.
One of the key features of the software being that it can link directly with other programs such as Modul8 (of course!), Resolume Avenue and other code based software such as OpenFrameworks. Using the Syphon plugin, all of it becomes child’s play.
Once the presentation had finished, François began a live demonstration controlling 12 food blenders, containing coloured liquids using MadMapper linked with DMX power controls and a guy playing MIDI notes on a keyboard. It was all very impressive and the crowd eager for more. Once the demo had finished – the cocktails were then distributed amongst the crowd. At this point everyone realised what the coloured liquid was… very strong tequila mixed with colourings, but predominantly TEQUILA!
In summary, a fantastic product, a superb presentation rounded off perfectly with a few custom made cocktails and a great after party.
If projection mapping interests you, you can’t go far wrong with MadMapper.
At present there are limited tutorials available on the net but i’m sure that will not last for long. For more information and options to demo or buy the software check out the links below.
