VJ Spetto & VJ Zaz – How to assemble a HD Mixer
Unless you are into VJing its unlikely that you are aware of the problem that faces VJs in modern times. There is a major issue at the moment in respect of video outputs – especially if you are mixing 2 sources. In short, laptops now can output either VGA or HD signals – which is fine if you are connecting straight to a projector. However if you wish to mix more than one source then the only (realistic) option is to use an Edirol 440HD, price at around £8000.00 – that pretty much rules it out for most people.

Dynamic duo – VJ Spetto and VJ Zaz (www.unitedVJs.com.br), who were the chiefs of this years VJ Contest held a workshop to show people how to build their own HD mixer using basic equipment. Having actually missed the workshop its impossible to write about their methods. All i know is that it involved butchering a PC with different graphics cards to create a fully functioning real time HD mixer. With the only drawback that you have to carry around a dirty big PC to your gigs.
Having investigated other options post workshop and for the benefit of the people who couldn’t make it to the workshop and are interested in building yourself an HD mixer, here’s a diy tutorial that was posted by VJ Fader and Neuromixer.
