Last night BUG returned to the BFI Southbank with a retrospective look at Moby‘s output and involvement with moving image production.
For those not fortunate enough to have gone to one of these events before, BUG: The Evolution of the Music Video sets out to showcase various new and innovative music videos. This is accompanied by presenter Adam Buxton‘s hilarious musings over the videos’ reception on YouTube and the bizarre user comments posted.
The night exhibited a wide selection of Moby’s music videos including ‘The Day’ from his brand new album Destroyed. It was also a chance to see some of the entries from BUG’s ‘Hello, Future’ competition where film makers were asked to make a music video for one of three tracks from the latest album. These were all of a very high quality and each film maker made very individual interpretations of Moby’s tracks.
Moby came to join Adam on stage to discuss the videos shown and his career. His opening comment was a humorous observation on how much Adam Buxton looked like American novelist Herman Melville, both men having thick beards, after Buxton had compared Moby with Heston Blumenthal.
During the discussion, Moby touched upon his relationship with cult film director David Lynch who he described as a genuinely nice guy and agreed with Mel Brooks who said Lynch is like ‘Jimmy Stewart on Acid’. He also gave some insight into the making of his numerous videos including ‘We Are All Made of Stars’, where he had to wear a spacesuit despite the sweltering LA heat.

The following three videos were part of the BUG’s Hello, Future: A Music Video Challenge. All were shortlisted and the winner will be announced at the Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors’ Showcase in Cannes on June 23rd. The winner will have the chance to work on a project in a key office in the Saatchi & Saatchi global agency network.
