From the wilds of Kazakhstan, three friends go on a fishing trip. Not the sort of start to a film many will be savouring. Dastan (Daniar Alshinov) is getting away from his highly stress and constantly nagging, highly pregnant wife Zhanna (Asel Kaliyeva). His friends are simply getting away. At first the fishing is second to the drinking and laughing but as they float down a quiet river, they come into contact with a local gang. This local gang are about to execute a local farmer that has crossed them. Well not crossed them exactly. More hidden in a well and tried to escape for them after maybe having inappropriate relations with something or someone. Add to this mix, a military maniac that is stalking the landscape and dispatching anyone who might be wandering about, and you get the stuff of nightmare!
If you happen to wander into the woods today or the watch this delightful comedy horror, you will be in for a surprise. Filled with comedic flair, a killer (literally) script and a cast that are versatile and even so ludicrous, SWEETIE, YOU WONT BELIEVE IT is a fine film. I sometimes worry about festival faves, films that have done well at festivals are often flavour of something films. But thankfully this, feeling like a mash up of WRONG TURN, THE HILLS HAVE EYES and DUDE WHERES MY CAR delivers in equally absurdist action and emotion. It seems that 101 Films and those good people at Frightfest have found a gem. One that deserves mining. Sadly for us BLU RAY types, the film lacked any extras and will hopefully be better treated in the distant future with a host of pieces on the uproarious delights. We might even get a sequal, as the door has been left firmly open. Well the hand is raised for it at the least!
