So I have to admire, no, really admire both 101 films and the work of Wakaliwood director Nabwana Isaac Godfrey Geoffrey. They are both the rare thing, something that makes cinema interesting agian. One because it took a chance and the other because, well it straight up released two classics for us to enjoy. What is Wakaliwood? Well here goes. Wakaliwood is Ugandan cinema par excellence. It is the home of “DA BEST OF DA BEST MOVIES!” (their words my upper case.) From films about mafia gangs, to cop killer classics, these are the greats of DIY commando cinema! Under the guidance of writer-director-producer Nabwana Isaac Godfrey Geoffrey (IGG), we get gifted not one but two gloriously outragous films. They call them gonzo action films, I call them Kampala kick arse classics and the best cinema with budgets that rarely exceed $200 USD.
WHO KILLED CAPTAIN ALEX and BAD BLACK are the films! Not a point in discussions of the story of narratives. Instead hail the copious and mesmerising extras. Now the print is taken from a lost compression DVD, so it is kinda rough and kinda ready. But it is all a part of the great AGFA tradition. If you dont like low budget, run now! The best bits are the VJ (a concept I had only heard of until now). Imagine an MC for the silver screen and you are say a quarter of the way there. VJ Emmie delights like I do, while watching a film, screaming and cheering. The first film is optional, the second is built in. Either way, well worth a listen. The Directors commentary on both films adds to the guerilla film making power and delights in who is that, where is this, what! How did you do that? type thing. I found it had me laughing and crying just enough to revist.
