The 1990s and into the early 00s saw a raft of slasher inspired films surface. To be honest, SCREAM underpinned the rise in the genre but after it came clever and interesting films. One of these was a personal fave of mine, the blood soaked revenge films of I KNOW WHAT YOU DID… So with the series about to be delivered to us, it is the right time to be watching the series that birthed all the slashing evil, privileged self interested teen, dead fisherman fun for this Halloween (and with 8 days to go, you better get ordering!).
8 – I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER TRILOGY (88 Films)
WHATS IT ABOUT?
When drunk teens drive cars, well that’s a recipe for a disaster. However when four college bound friends, on their prom night and really happy to be about to become the best they can ever be, it will do. To add insult to injury, they then try to clean it up by dumping the body and trying to make it look like a drowning, well it begins a deadly series of events. The sequels see that the stories conclusion both times around, left little holes in other lives (as well as new ones in new entries to the cast.
WHY SHOULD WE WATCH IT FOR HALLOWEEN?
The first film, written by SCREAM scripter Kevin Williamson, is an interesting take on the genre expectations. The ideas of guilt, regret and remorse are ever present, but the story displacing expectations is fun. The sequel (I STILL KNOW) ups the anti with a plumb. You might not be expecting it to, but it adds humour (something the original sadly lacks), great set pieces and two stunning leads (if you like Brandy and Jennifer Love that is). The other thing is that it moves the setting to a location that delves into horror past and intentionally nods to a few gems of the era! The threequal (its a thing nowadays!) is less fun but will top off a Halloween night, if you start at 8 (each run at 90 mins) and has enough empty headed scripting to make you want to see the blood fly!
WHAT SHOULD WE LOOK OUT FOR?
The great box art aside, you need to spend a little time listening to the The Hysteria Continues Podcast on the first two films. Both are funny and honest. Bravely so, sometimes. Do this after the film , as they both do spoil it, with both front of and behind scenes notes!
