COCAINE BEAR BLU RAY REVIEW

The legend of the COCAINE BEAR might not stand up to Elizabeth Banks black comedy film, but I guess like a good joke, ‘its the way you tell them!’. Inspired by a 1985 true story, which saw a drug runner and his plane crash into a woodland reserve and then a black bear scoff some, if not all, of said cache. It is unknown if the oddball collection of cops, criminals, kids, tourists, and mothers with a gun, did actually  converging on said forest but then thats their story and they are sticking with it.

My story is as follows, drug smuggler crashes into ground and so does his plane. The police find the body but not the drugs. They figure its in the forest. St. Louis drug kingpin Syd White (Ray Liotta in his final role) wants the drugs left over and unfound back. Said forest is the Chattahoochee–Oconee National Forest, where a rather nosy American black bear has found, eaten and is now addicted to cocaine. This makes it both highly aggressive and also horny for drugs. Cool. After attacking two hikers, Elsa (Hannah Hoekstra)  and Olaf (Kristofer Hivju neither from FROZEN), the problems are about to get worse for all in the forest. Dee Dee (Brooklynn Prince) and her bud Henry ( Christian Convery) are there after skipping school. Dee Dee mother Sari (Keri Russell) is there looking for her along side a bunch of law enforcement, drug cartel crew members and a young street punk…

The fact that Elizabeth Banks is open and honest about the film, its making and her take on it, in the commentary (not noted below but its there) is refreshing. So is the in camera affects, the darkly black humour and the sense that, as the kill dissection feature notes, this is a slasher film for the vegan crowd. There is a lot it lacks. A logical conclusion. A coherent narrative for the final 30 minutes. The script wavers often. But there is so much to enjoy that I think you will be hard pressed to not enjoy it!
