THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE BLU RAY REVIEW SECOND SIGHT

Jesus must have wept when this was announced. The horror film of horror films, that has seen a fair few releases grace us and its door. Though it is well known that the UHD is around about in the Americas and a continental version should pop up as well, this withdrawn film masterpiece is in the UK again, courtesy of Second Sight. Now yes it is their (I count) fourth slice at it and I feel they have really got no where else to go with it, so lets get to the meat of it…

You know the story. Five friends travelling through rural Texas. They meet a man with a few issues. They then stumble across what appears to be a deserted house. The smell should have tipped them off but its only when they enter that they discover something sinister within. A murderous family, a human skin faced chainsaw killer slashing at them, one by one they end up dead, its a house of horrors that maybe no one will escape! Now past Tobe Hopper’s greatest film and horrors pinnacle of never again seen mastery, TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSARCE need be seen by anyone with a passion for cinema…

The 2 Blu Rays house the extras and I will start there (one note for you, I avoided the UHD because everyone covered it, my thoughts were it looked little more majestic than it did on the last SS release). My oh my, just as MARTIN supped up the offer on the discs, so does this. Amanda Reyes and Bill Ackerman commentary is a strutting piece of commentary. Missing nothing (though I still love Hoppers). They chance on slivers of film knowledge and then delve. They also discuss a few reasons for why the film is effective and how it can be tracked as the completion of PYSCHO’s cinematic vision. There are a lot of commentaries, which have all been heard before. Then we get the The Legacy of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Its sharp. Second Sight are often able to make this documentaries that layer a classic film. MARTIN had one. So did DAWN OF THE DEAD. Well this again offers us the film as cultural landmark and considers our relationship to it from that angle well.

Alexandra Heller-Nicholas is offered a chance at her take on TCM and again astounds us with a reading, notes, ideas and frames. Though for some of the egotistical reviewers (and happy shouty web reviewers) they feel she is a box ticker, I feel that her positioning and sheer hard work, reveal that any film (including here), feel fresher and actually attract younger film fans to the work. This type of work, keeps people in a space of engagement and not in an attic and under dusty macs. I was there, I remembered it being withdrawn (or banned). I remember it as a marvel on release. Uncut also. But that time has passed. Kids today know of this in a history book. Remember it but do not be stuck in it…
