We return to the Universal horror universe, with four more tales of terror from the vaults of Universal Pictures. Some of the regulars are here and there and the films are a mixed bag of loathsome villainy, menacing monsters, evil evildoing and…well you know the rest. From maniacal hunter and collector of wild animals in MURDERS IN THE ZOO (dir. A. Edward Sutherland, 1933), to a mansion in the jungle with strange characters, secret passages and a murderer who masters the art mysterious re appearance in NIGHT MONSTER (dir. Ford Beebe, 1942).To a group of people stuck in a haunted castle with a killer in HORROR ISLAND (dir. George Waggner, 1941). And a somnambulists use of a giant as an instrument of evil HOUSE OF HORRORS (dir. Jean Yarbrough, 1946) its all here.
Indeed it is. Though all slightly stringy, over long and padded. This set offers another dice into the Universal B movie horror cycle. There are stand out reasons to buy. Two films are superb. Then there is the extras. Stephen Jones and Kim Newman seem to have a whale of a time, with the sheer monstrous thrills on show, connecting the dots like a dot to dot championship. Kevin Lyons and Jonathan Rigby are more academic and slightly more heavy but I adore all four for what they have given us for so many years in the cinema world.
