From Writer/Director Rob Zombie THE MUNSTERS is a heinous crime to the series, cinema and for that matter, my brain cells. Ok, so I wanted to write a balanced review. After a screening of this, I wanted to die and not be returned as a munster. Zombie is not for everyone. His films are sometimes bloody messes and other times just bloody awful. Here the tone and tenor of the work is so off, it is unpleasent. The performances lack comedy and visually, it looks cheap and, though intended to be funny due to this, seems to add to the overall awfulness. To be honest, this film is for no one. Lily (Mrs R Zombie) is 150-years-old and needs a man. Ok, so the origin story of the film prehaps. The vampires she is looking at are pretty poor fair. One being Nosferatu (looking like all the make up money was spent on him, Jeremy Wheeler). When she sets her eyes on Herman (Jeff Daniel Phillips), a gangly seven-foot-tall promethous of a man, she is smitten. He has the brain of a comedian, which allows for one good joke and the body of a decayed fish. Which is not the stink you smell. Her father, The Count (Daniel Roebuck) and Hermans creator Dr Wolfgang ( Richard Brake) arent happy and will stop them at all costs. With some frankly idiotic positioning to get here, it gets worse.
I cant bring myself to analyse deeply the film. I can only say, that if you are buying the Blu Ray, the best parts of it are found in the extras. The commentary humanises Zombie, which is hard to do. He has press bggage. He is a varied set of ego and entitlement. It also shows how much he loved the series and suggetss, that he was interested in making the film black and white. The problems, which are many, could be boiled down to his audience wouldnt swallow it, his backers neither. Add to that the lacklustre script and his other films having more ups and downs at the box office, than a roller coaster and you start to feel for him. Somewhere in there, deep in his self, is a good film maker. His work has touches of something. Maybe it is just luck. Maybe both with the film and the bigger bits of his career, it is something. Whatever it is, THE MUNSTERS is not it…
