Halloween feature 50 days, 50 slays! Day 28 Classic Scares! KARLOFF AT COLUMBIA

Sometimes you have the opportunity to see a master at work. Boris Karloff is one of the masters and in this selection for Halloween (with 28 days to go!) are some of his best and most memorable works. Here he plays in 6 roles that see a whole catalogue of delights for the seasoned viewer. You get both classic uses of expressionism and wonderfully sadistic stories that meld his physical menace with person acting intuition.

WHATS IT ABOUT?

Well there are 6 tales of terror here, The Black Room; The Man They Could Not Hang; The Man With Nine Lives; Before I Hang; The Devil Commands; and The Boogie Man Will Get You. The best is The Man They Could Not Hang. A simple enough tale of a resurrectionist scientist that sees him test the experiment by murdering a student and then use his creation to save said cadaver again. The police arrest him for the murder and he vows revenge.

WHY SHOULD WE WATCH IT FOR HALLOWEEN?

A heap of reasons spring to mind. The atmosphere, the condition of the films (they have been well kept and restored). Audiences that like a film with artistry and genre troupes layered on thick will love them but the best reason for film fans is actually just the great films themselves.

WHAT SHOULD WE LOOK OUT FOR?

You could do no worse than listen to the excellent commentaries that are on the discs. The Kevin Lyons and Jonathan Rigby for Before I Hang is packed with detail and delicious back and forth between the two.
