Full Circle – The Haunting of Julia (UHD + Blu-ray Disc)
I cant pretend that this film release does not have a bunch of other versions loitering in the sideview, waiting to compete for your money. You will know that Imprint have a version, as does Scream Factory. That said, BFI have the respect and the resilience to stand up on their own. With a clear vision of what FULL CIRCLE is ( AKA THE HAUNTING OF JULIA / AKA A BFI Flipside release: number 045). Based on a Peter Straub called JULIA, about a mother Julia (Mia Farrow) who flees a controlling husband Magnus (Keir Dullea) after the horrific death of her daughter. She moves to Holland Park, re-establishing herself in an old house with a neighbour (Tom Conti). Yet she is unsettled. A child flits in and out. She finds herself haunted by this image, sending her on a strange journey of self-discovery.
I hated FULL CIRCLE when I saw it. Its so frankly inconsistent. So lopsided in its writing, convoluted and delivered with an absence of urgency. This does not mean it is not worth something or worth conversing about. Some have conversed about the quality of this transfer (spoiler alert it is very good), the regionality of the release (Blu is B, the 4K is ABC). The funniest part of the conversation is not from anyone in the fan circles. It is in the mind of the films director Richard Longcraine, who turns in a hilariously honest introduction and a superb commentary with Simon Fitzjohn. They bat about the films many missed bits from the novel, also laughing into the mix of how the film was Canadian peopled and funded. Some of the other extras are excellent, better than the film to be honest. Tom Conti interview is light hearted and honest. Kim Newman video essay is as focused on the novel (of which he has a pristine copy) as the film and adds textures to the films release and Straub writing. This tops out the really great but everything else is on the higher end as you would expect from the BFI. Yes, there were lots of fan requests for the BFI to release and I believe that almost everyone will be very pleased with.
