Its the late 90s. Your man here was coming home from a club, pub, gig whatever. Occasionally I would turn on the later night, early morning TV and watch whatever appeared on the screen. FORTEAN TV was literally one of these series that I would enjoy in these drunken stupors. I revealled in the frank insanity of it. The hijinx of the edges of society. The realms it travelled through. It was very popular to be honest. Focusing on a series of well known bums on seat driving subjects. The paranormal, the supernatural, the curious and strange, even the unexplained. It drew eyes to the TV like EUROTRASH drew young boys to its carnal joys. FORTEAN rose after the success of shows like THE X FILES. Hosted by the intrepid Reverend Lionel Fanthorpe, a real vicar and an adoring follower of the bizarre, it mined a rich vein. This in itself was fun but add to this the subversive mix, (which might not now translate as well as you would think) you have a potent blend. The series saw it cover events like exorcisms and alien abductions, freak weather, Evangelical sex scenes, monsterous collections and even a weird animal or two. Some saw it as akin to a TV freak show, which in places and in tone, they would be right. However I also felt, laying there in the wee hours, slightly the worse for wear, that the series was challenging the orthodoxy.
The series became a cult attraction and for its second season (included here) it span into darker fields, including a later night uncensored version that left a few eyesbrows raised higher than Everest. Though the series has not been restored or even brushed up, it has a time stamp of the era. The 90s was, like the 80s, drenched in awfulness and horror. It had some great moments, from drungs, music and joys of freedoms. All is captured here for the few and favourites to enjoy! All 18 episodes, the harder-edged Uncut spin-off episodes and the highly memorable Christmas special are all on the set to enjoy!
