The World of Charles and Ray Eames
Edited by Catherine Ince
Publication date: 26th October 2015

An in-depth, personal insight into the world of the pioneering design duo to coincide with a major exhibition at the Barbican Gallery.

Charles and Ray Eames are one of the most influential design duos of the 20th century. Their work has been an exploration across many mediums influencing the design, architecture and photography world. This book delves into the story of the Eames office’s output and the behind the scenes personal lives of the husband-and-wife duo to create an immersive and personal overview of the design legends.

A ‘laboratory’ active for over four decades during the post-war, modern period, they produced a vast array of pioneering and influential projects. Known mainly for their furniture design, very little is known about their use of other media. Their oeuvre goes beyond the world of design as their ground-breaking ‘multi-media architecture’ led them towards film and photography as tools for modelling ideas. They also created multi-media installations, held exhibitions and even developed new models for arts education.

Alongside the Eameses immense output are contemporaneous reviews and magazine articles, writings by Charles and Ray Eames themselves and their personal correspondence. Produced in close collaboration with Eames Demetrios, the design duo’s grandson, this publication presents the husband-and-wife team from both personal and professional perspectives.

Connected to a major exhibition developed in partnership with the Eames Estate opening at the Barbican Art Gallery this is the official publication set to celebrate the inspiring and prolific world of the Eames.
