Imagine if you merged Slow Cinema, a movement I championed in the mind 10s but that had been around for a while before and the comedy of slight and site gags. This is exactly what THE DETECTORISTS is. A lovely, soft, deeply personal, emotive journey through that ever so soft of summers in this wonderful country. Mackenzie Crook plays as Andy Stone, a man keen on finding things at the expense of his relationship with Becky (played with gentle warmth by Rachael Stirling). Toby Jones is Lance, a man of the people who lost a wife but found the ground and the music in his heart. These two eager metal detectorists share a dream of finding buried treasure. Well more than that. Buried history. One thing that will change their lives and possibly everyone elses understanding of the past, forever.
And thats where THE DETECTORISTS, a show as simple as it is, over these three series and two Christmas specials evolves past much other comedy series. It is both deeply humorous and heart-warming in its engagement of people obsessed with and equally emotionally involved in, finding. Men as men. Not as those in diaboloical schemes or feasting over the nightmares of others. These are men who want something big but through hardwork and connecting. A thing so small and personal, as to be invisible. We follow their lives, loves and discoveries certainly. We also regard them as friends, family and confidants. Now I have been told I cant spoil anything as there are many who havent watched the series but I will say this. It peaks perfectly. Balances its pathos with humour extrodinarily well and delivers on almost every front.
