An epic fantasy tale based in the American deep south, during the early 19th century from David Fincher, director of ‘Seven’ and ‘Fight Club’.
The film follows, as you might guess, the life story of Benjamin Button – played for the most part by Brad Pitt. Benjamin’s life is basically in reverse. He is born with the characteristics of an 80 year old man and throughout life grows younger.
A baby boy is born and is assumed to be horribly disfigured and some sort of freak. The mother dies in childbirth and the father’s initial reaction is to throw the baby in the river. He changes his mind and leaves the baby on the stairs of an home for the elderly. He is then adopted by a black woman thats run the home. There are some clever characters that pop up throughout Benjamins life. The most prevalent is Cate Blanchett, Daisy with whom the love story unfolds.
It is a very thought provoking film but in my opinion far too long and i found myself thinking when is this film going to end? Having said that it is entertaining, purely due to the fact its a story that you will have never seen before. The sort of camera trickery and effects that are used would not have been possible years ago. Apart from a scene when the middle aged Brad Pitt is looking in the mirror and his head is too big for his body – the effects are faultless.
Director: David Fincher
Writer: Eric Roth
