NOSFERATU 100th Annivesary cinema screening

It was in the early 2000s that I first saw NOSFERATU on the big screen at the BFI. Then as now, it was in a newly restored version. Then as now it distilled much that went after it, in terms of horror and fear. Revelling in the most darker tones of societal ills, public weariness and the all to real threat of the unknown. The film became a sensation. Though it had to face a bitter copyright trial and the destruction of many of its copies at home and abroad. Released in 1922 (100 years ago to be precise) it has come to define screen terror. Director F.W. Murnau, translated this albeit unauthorised adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the first of its kind. He imbibed it with a sophistication in aesthetic but it was the real world and Max Schreck’s unforgettable performance as the vampire Count Orlok, that made it timeless.

Eureka have built the hopefully, definitive version of the film after searching for the best surviving material and a re-recording of the original score by Hans Erdmann, just before its 100 birthday year.

In celebration of the centenary, Nosferatu will be returning to cinemas in the UK & Ireland throughout 2022. Screenings will be announced via www.nosferatu100.co.uk
