Will Avatar break the Titanic barrier this weekend?

James Camerons 1997 film Titanic currently occupies the number 1 spot of highest grossing film of all time, when it raked in $1.8 billion globally and Cameron is looking to try and overtake this record with his latest effort. Avatar has already overtaken Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King to get the number two spot but the question is which order will Cameron get his one-two in? Avatar’s global tally currently stands at $1.37bn after 4 weeks on release so is looking quite on for the top spot, still on in most cinemas and still making phenomenal advance sales. However even if Avatar does beat Titanics records some may argue that if you adjusted the total gross to account for infaltion Avatar would more likely have to reach $2.8 billion to really beat Titanic, and it doesn’t look like that’s gonna happen anytime soon  – so ultimately it depends on your view as to whether Avatar really has done better than Titanic. The only question really left to be asked is what on earth will Fox and Cameron spend it on – is Avatar 2 in the works perhaps?
