With Edward Norton no longer expected to return to the role, Mark Ruffalo is set to star as the Hulk in the upcoming Avengers film. Norton, who starred as the angry green monster in 2008’s reboot The Incredible Hulk, was dropped from the role earlier this month for not embodying “the creativity and collaborative spirit of [the] other talented cast members”, according to the producers.
Norton has become infamous for his supposed difficulty on set. He reportedly interfered greatly with the production of American History X, so much so that director Tony Kaye disowned the movie. Similarly, Marvel Studios have come under fire before for their treatment of film stars over pay issues, such as dropping Terrence Howard from the Iron Man sequel.
Ruffallo was last seen in Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island and will join Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson and Chris Evans in the superhero flick, which is under the direction of Joss Whedon. The Avengers is scheduled to release on May 4, 2012.
