An often considered over released but unlikely really very good re-release of a classic of robotics gone bananas and how we should future proof our world! The Terminator (Arnie obvs) is sent back by John Connor (Edward Furlong) to protect his younger self from the evil Terminator T-1000 (Robert Patrick). Simple this may be to say but as we are well aware, it is often less than simple to save anyone or stop a rampaging Terminator from the future. T 800 has to rescue the young boy and his mother Sarah Conner (Linda Hamilton) from the machine as he has been instructed and destroy the Skynet AI computer system that is about to takeover the world. Sarah doesn’t trust his intention as the memories of his predecessor and the annihilation of all her friends and family lives large. The police still have him as a wanted criminal after he destroyed a police station and everyone inside it. Then of course the new liquid shaped and reforming T-1000 is ever present and ever fighting its way to kill Connor and change the fate of the future!
My childhood came back to me in a flash as the credits rolled for T2. The film that was a cultural phenomena, the most expensive of its date and the film that made James Cameron a force to be reckoned with. The original film was a cult classic but this was a big, bold, gun shooting, fist smacking blockbuster and no messing. Cameron still understood and still understands the building blocks of film. He understands what makes an audience connect to a film and he understood with T2 that less was most definitely not more. It has fights, stunts, special effects (All still look very good in places and with 3D to sex them up even more).
It has the one liners which have fallen into our collective language, it has the superstar Arnie in his definitive role as The Terminator (a phrase only he can say and get away with sounding hard as nails.) It also has somethings I didn’t remember being as good as they are. You have the excellent Robert Patrick giving a perfect balance of homicidal manic and cool as cucumber killer. You have Linda Hamilton playing unhinged with a clever use of eye line and voice direction that slipped by me. You then have all the background layers and editing that builds, ebbs and flows the piece along. The other thing is that the direction controls the piece so well. A skilled director understands the movements of the audience and the film, which Cameron does so well. I really did enjoy it the possibly 15 time I have seen it. It has been almost 10 years since last seeing it and it was as good as ever.
So now to the Blu ray that houses the film! Firstly yep its well worth it. It looks stunning. Holding nothing back. It looks so good from that tired DVD release. The 3D adds a fair few tones to the scenes between T-1000 and anyone else but I am still less than sold on it personally. The extras also add to the reason to buy it. The 23 person commentary is ok but Cameron and Wisher are the ones to hear. The making of has been done before but it is that Reprogramming feature. That is a gift of quality and one I enjoyed !
