The rise of Christopher Nolan has been extremely quick in Directorial terms. It was only 1998 when he first released Following. A part time film project that was filmed at weekends and during his spare time, with a lot of friends helping out with the acting and as background extras. A very accomplished piece for a first proper outing behind the camera.
Previous to that, there was a short film called Doodlebug. For anyone interested, you can pick it up on a short film collection DVD called “Cinema16: British Short Films”. It’s more like an advanced student project but still very well made and polished. Following, Following and really the film that announced Nolan to the World was Memento. A super stylish crime thriller that made a big impact on Hollywood. This was the film that showed Nolan’s credibility as a big time Director. At the time, people talked about him as a potential new Kubrick. A statement that is often banded around, without a great deal of substance. Personally, i wouldn’t give Nolan that tag but he is an extremely talented, and highly intelligent film maker.
With each new Nolan film you can see his experience grow and with it, the quality of workmanship and story telling ability. You can tell a truly great film maker as they don’t have any bad films in their repetoire. Nolan fits the bill perfectly. Except possibly Insomnia – which really is an inferior remake of the 1997 Norwegian film of the same name.
As for Inception. What can you say? It’s simply one of the most impressive films ever made. Beautiful to look at, incredible acting, strong script, super intelligent plot… everything you want from a top class film.
For many Nolan will be famous for his masterful re-telling of the Batman story. The Dark Knight stands as a behemoth in the comic book to movie field and quite possibly the best super hero movie of all time.
The final piece of the puzzle, The Dark Knight Rises will soon be revealed to the World, completing Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Tickets are on sale now for upcoming screenings at the BFI IMAX – visit here for more info.
