Starring: Denzel Washington, John Travolta, John Turturro, James Gandolfini
Many people will remember the classic The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, made in 1974, which was nominated for 2 BAFTA’s. Its the sort of film that really shouldn’t have been re-made, some things are better left untouched. Having said that, its not as bad as you might think.
In terms of plot the films are virtually the same, however there are enough differences to make it a worthwhile watch. The basic plot is a group of criminals, hijack a train full of hostages and try to trade them for all sorts of bonuses and make their escape without being caught.
The original film starred Walter Matthau as the detective trying to solve the riddle. This time around that role has been replaced by both Denzel Washington and John Turturro.
Its certainly a tense thriller and a decent amount of style remains from the original. The characters in my opinion are not as good and don’t have the same class about them but they do a better than average job.
Tony Scott directs a solid film. You know what you are going to get with him, no award winners but good entertainment. His previous work includes, ‘True Romance’, ‘Beverley Hills Cop’ and ‘Crimson Tide’.
