Starring: Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Jaaved Jaffrey
The first I heard of this film was when my friends told me about snoop dogg singing a rap song for the title song, “sing is kinng”. Naturally curious, I jumped onto youtube and searched for the song, and low and behold there was snoop dogg in a phug (turban) busting a move with Akshay Kumar.
6 months later, I finally get round to watching the film (not because I thought it wasn’t any good but more so because I’m not really into bollywood) and im pleasantly surprised. Once I’ve gotten over the very open Punjabi swearing being used by the films characters, i get into what is a typical bollywood love story told in Australia.
The films main star Akshay Kumar plays Happy Singh, a nauseating singh from the pind (village) in india. He is sent on a mission to bring his friend Lucky Singh back from Australia to the village, on the false pretence that Luckys parents are not well. Little does Happy know that this is just a simple ploy for the locals to get rid of him for a while and have a bit of peace and quiet.
As youd expect with a bollywood flick, Happy singh meets a lovely girl along the way to Australia, who mesmerises him and becomes his only thought until he reaches Australia. On goes what is an entertaining love triangle story in which Akshay excels himself as an actor. The film has some quite funny moments, although I have to admit that I was a bit surprised at some of the adult themes running through the film (given that Indian cinema has traditionally been so sensitive).
The best element of this film for me is the soundtrack. Jee Karda is a song that still rocks clubs both this side of the water and an India. A good film, Id recommend you watch it with some guidance depending on your family.
