Starring: Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Marion Cotillard, Jason Clarke, Rory Cochran
This is the story of the infamous bank robber, John Dillinger. In this case played by Johnny Depp. Dillinger was a real hero to the public – a sort of Robin Hood figure. At the height of the robberies, Dillinger and his gang were unstoppable.
Set during the great depression in America, during the 1930’s when most people had nothing but contempt for the banks who had dragged them into the mess… sounding familiar?
Through daring prison breaks and shear audacity Dillinger was loved by the general public and despised by the government. He was joined by Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd in all manner of shoot outs. At the time J.Edgar Hoover was in the early stages of setting up the FBI to combat people like this and in fact Dillinger became America’s first Public Enemy Number One – with Melvin Purivs the top cop trying to track him down.
The film is directed by Michael Mann and fans of his work, such as ‘Heat’ and ‘Ali’ will love this. I personally really enjoy Mann’s classy and intelligent style of film making and this is another classic to add to the list.
