District 9 (2009)

Starring: Sharlto Copley, Jason Cope, Nathalie Boltt

Make no mistake this is an exceptional film, i’d go so far as to say its a mega film – and i don’t use that term lightly. The trailer previews alone should be as much convincing as you need to go and see this film. If in any doubt, check your local cinema listings, look for District 9 and book your tickets.

Although not directing it himself, the man behind the scenes pulling the strings is Peter Jackson of ‘Lord of The Rings’ and ‘King Kong’ fame, and lets not forgot his early film ‘Bad Taste’. If anyone has seen that, its a compliment to how far people can progress in the movie world.

He obviously has a passion for ufo and aliens and altogether other wordly creatures, which is where this film suits him down to the ground.

District 9 is the thinking mans science fiction film. In essence its a chase movie with a social commentary. Very intelligent, thought provoking and original.

The plot is basically this – 20 years ago aliens landed on Earth. All out war was expected but never came, instead the aliens became refugees and posted off to District 9, a giant refugee camp for ufo and aliens in South Africa while the World decided what to do with them.

Tensions begin to rise when Wikus Van Der Merwe contracts a virus and suddenyl becomes the most wanted man on the planet and holds the secrets to alien technology. Wheres he going to hide? Thats right District 9. Enough said – no spoilers from me!!

This film deserves its place as one of the hottest UK film releases this year, and i’m sure it will be very successful. I sincerely hope Peter Jackson returns not just to pull off a sequel for District 9 but also to make The Hobbit film – the prequel to LOTR. Please Peter… please!!
