onedotzero festival 2011: nightfall 11 review

Each year the onedotzero festival line-up of screenings has featured certain staples since the beginning, programmes such as wow+flutter, j-star and extended play. Last year a new category was introduced – nightfall. Last year’s programme was very good, it clearly proved popular with the organisers and audience alike, and this was year it was back!

nightfall serves as a place to put all the darker content which is submitted. This is the place that you will find the twisted stuff, zombies, violence, nudity and generally more adult themes.

The screening begins…

Martin de Thurah: Lindisfarne / James Blake
UK
2011

A group of close friends perform an unusual ritual.

Sandro: Butterflies
USA
2011

A truly chilling piece of work. Starring the legend John Malkovich as someone at the edge of despair. Made with a combination of HD video and high-res stills. My favourite piece of the entire festival. Genius.

Guy Verge Wallace: Wrecking Ball / Papa vs Pretty
Australia
2011

Stop motion models in the spirit of Jan Svankmajer – inspired by a scene from Pink Floyd’s The Wall.

Cederic Nicolas-Troyan: Carrot vs Ninja
USA
2010

A cartoon style adventure with live action.

Paul Alexandre, Dara Cazamea, Maxime Cazaux, Romain Delaunay & Laurent Monner: Hambuster
France
2011

When fast food goes bad and reverses the roll of who is eating who.

Richard Payne: Badman Silence / Deceit
UK
2011

The director Richard Payne said a few words at the beginning of the screening – he humorously described the work as simply, What if Batman was a c**t? He told of the months and months of painstaking work to create this fantastic piece. Cutting out old Batman comic books and animating those, one frame at a time. Long, yes but a very original and masterful bit of work. The music didn’t quite live up to the video for me, but decide for yourself…

Matt Devine [The Glue Society]: Playing the Villain / Son of Kick
Australia
2011

A firm internet favourite this one. I’m sure many a victim of car crime would be wishing this to happen, for the rest of us… a little bit gross, but very nice idea.

Sune Reinhardt Fogtmann: Mighty Antlers
Denamrk
2011

Man with car vs deer. There’s only one way this is going to end.

Owen Tooth: The Pack
UK
2011

An ambitious and poetic experimental horror following two simultaneous stories on a collision course, one through the audio and the other through images.

Zeitguised: QCC
Germany
2010

Art series that simulates comic characters between abstract, surreal and the sculptural.

Dim Mak: ZHM / Mustard Pimp
USA
2011

Banned from YouTube! It’s worth watching on that basis alone, or you could sum it up as ‘If Jim Henson made porn’.

Lernert + Sander: Elektrotechnique / De Jeugd Van Tegenwoordig
Netherlands
2011

A series of everyday household objects, joined together into sexual machines. A bit like the old Honda advert, but dirtier and funnier.

JWT Paris: Sexy Fingers
France
2011

It’s no surprise to see this piece as part of the nightfall schedule. Originally this was some sort of awareness campaign about AIDS i think. Quality animation and sublime comedy timing.

James Wignall: Breastfeeding
UK
2011

An innovative take on breastfeeding, something so commonplace in life. Beautiful in a very dark way, one you will not forget.

Saam Farahmand: Twin Flames / Klaxons
UK
2010

Freaky video of multiple bodies joined together – a human centipede of sorts without the stitching. Based on the old horror film Society (1989).

Douglas Burgdoff: Peeking Virtue
USA
2011

Things are not always as they seem is the moral here. Sweet smiles and a terryfingly but funny vagina!

ERROR videos: ERROR videos IV
Chile
2010

Hyperactivity, blips and glitches. Nice work.

Guillaume Parra, Carole Chanal + Gaetan Baldy: L’Entrepot
France
2011

Hyper real 3D animation. A frozen moment in time after a toxic waste leak.

Stuart Aitken: Dead Island Trailer
UK
2011

A fantastic animation and piece of storytelling, played in reverse. If only the game was as good as the trailer.

Ben Abdallah / The Blob Outaspace Zombie Killer
France
2011

Megaforce: The Greeks / Is Tropical
France
2011

A group of kids play with super soakers, that actually turn out to be high grade weapons. Stylishly made but a bit too moody for my liking. Bold in concept but necessary?

David Lewandowski: Going to the Store
USA
2011

A short made for the final episode of “Everything,” an anthology series at Channel 101.

Clement Deneux: ZombinLaden – The Axis of Evil Dead
France
2011

If you don’t watch the video based on the title alone then there is no help for you.
