I have long liked Signal One Entertainment. A small label, fighting against the powers of the big boys like Arrow, Criterion and others. The problem has been though, that in order to get some of the big ticket items, the more they offered less extras on a disc. This has left not only me but others, with a bad taste in the mouth. 50 releases, with maybe 30 with significant extras and the rest with little to nothing extra to show for the situation of spending your hard earned money. This is, in terms of economics, a net negitive return for some. Now THE ENFORCER is here to show that nothing has changed and the mire is still be traversed. The film is rather good, District Attorney, Martin Ferguson (Bogart) is out to stop the (veiled but obvious Murder Inc link) hitman for hire scheme headed by crime boss Albert Mendoza (Everett Sloane). The problem is that Mendoza’s henchman Joe Rico (Ted De Cosia) has turned informer. With this, the mob boss is finally arrested. As we know, in cinema, there needs to be a catalyst. A reason for our bums on seats and our eyes on screen.
It comes as Rico falls from the 5th floor of the police headquarters and Ferguson hasnt long to stop Mendoza in his tracks with something he might have missed. Famous for its direction, the action is covered by now less than Roaul Walsh, THE ENFORCER is a clever film that draws you in and delivers with clout. Forgetting the lack of extras here, you can focus on just how good these under watched and long hidden films can be for the modern viewer. They are often leaner than the bigger ticket films. Well structured and serviced by a solid script and never scrimp on their ability to action. If you are less than thrilled by films from the genre or films from the era, this might actually deliver on the promise of being both different and similiar enough.
