Starring: Mickey Rourke, Marisa Tomei, Evan Rachel Wood

This biopic is about the aging professional wrestler, Randy ‘The Ram’ Robinson, played by Mickey Rourke. Its set around twenty years after his prime. It paints a sad picture of a man who’s growing old and lonely and longing for his previous glories. He now works in a supermarket, making a few bucks from guest appearances at low-key local wrestling shows.

After one of the matches, Randy has a heart attack and it urges him to look closely at himself, when the doctor advises him never to wrestle again. It shows the struggle of a true champion coming to terms with the fact it was all over 20 years ago and that the good times are never coming back.

It is directed by the very talented Darren Aronofsky whose recent work hass included the strange but excellent ‘Pi’ and ‘Requiem for a Dream’.

This film is a slow burner, you’d expect a film called ‘The Wrestler’ to be all about the action. Its not, its a sad tale about a man who has lived an amazing life of crowd adoration and follows his depressive struggle as he begins to realise he isolated all the people he loved in doing that and now has nobody left.

Mickey Rourke defied everybody with this film and produced the performance of his life. A fantastic portrayal of The Ram and the success of this film is hugely down to him.
