The Disaster Movie

With 2012 hitting cinemas on Friday it’s got us thinking about Disaster movies – the biggest the best and the rest.  There are basically three different types of earth wrecking disaster movie – the natural disaster, (earthquakes, flooding damage, volcanoes etc), man-made disasters (ruining the planet through war/pollution, nuclear explosions) and then lastly the monster and alien invasion disaster films. Most good disaster films cross over the genres and often feature some sort of sci-fi element and in this weeks poll we’ve listed our top ten disaster movies – but it’s up to you to rank them for us – which is your favourite – do you prefer the gobbling dinosaurs of Jurassic Park or the dramatic earth wrecking scenes of The Day After Tomorrow. Vote in our weekly poll on the left hand side….

There was a hint of religious controversy this week wiht 2012’s director Roland Emerich revealing that he was too afraid to blow up the Kaaba, the Islamic holy building at Mecca as he feared it would cause some sort of outrage and backlash. So apparently it’s all right to threaten other religions buildings (rember the Vatican in Angels and Demons, no problem there) but it seems Hollywood is too sacred to offend Islam – even the recent announcement that Barrie Osborne, producer of The Lord of the Rings and The Matrix is going to produce a film about Islam’s Prophet Mohammed was followed by a statement that in a film about Mohammed , he somehow won’t be depicted, in agreement with Islamic rules. Hmm… not really sure how that’s gonna work.

But back to disasters – what ridiculous disaster scenes can you think of that Hollywood hasn’t tried out yet – here are a few ideas of ours but can you come up with any better ones of your own?

  • Rather than everything burning down or blowing up, a really strong wind simply threatens to blow everything, including humans, off the planet
  • For some mysterious reason, all humans simply falls into a deep sleep never to wake up – certainly sounds less boring than some films I’ve had to endure recently
  • Humans are simply being unable to function after Facebook is closed down – how on earth did we ever cope before social networking??
