I never thought i would be writing a new film review for a new Star Trek film, but here we are. Gone are the days of the William Shatner movies – enter a new beginning with Chris Pine filling Captain Kirks shoes.

Now the director for the new era is J.J. Abrams, who many will be familiar with from the fantastic TV series Lost. He was also producer of the recent movie success ‘Cloverfield’. So he comes to the project with a certain amount of class.

To half the world the USS Enterprise is an American aircraft carrier, to the devoted trekkie it is The Starship USS Enterprise and this version is by far the most impressive we have ever seen. The benefits of modern day computer graphics have done wonders for the look and style of the whole Star Trek brand.

This new Star Trek is a re-branding exercise done so well recently with James Bond in Casino Royale and Batman with Batman Begins that someone obviously thought it was time for the Enterprise crew to be told properly.

The young spock is played very capably by Zachary Quinto. I’m glad to say we still get to see Leonard Nimoy (the original doctor Spock) – this time as Spock Prime. The young Spock and Kirk start off not really liking each other but grow to depend on each other as they battle against the old enemy, The Romulans who are trying to blow up both Vulcan, Spocks home planet and Earth.

It really is a fantastic film, i’m not even much of an original Star Trek fan but this is far better than the old cheesy stuff. This has real class, good performances, good script and a great new platform from which to launch many more films to come.

As a brand, Star Trek will never die and i dare say the business of Star Trek merchandise will run and run with Star Trek ring tones probably some of the most popular on the planet… Earth that is.

Director: J.J. Abrams
Writer: Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman
