Ray Winstone plays the main character as a retired gangster living in Spain with a wife, nice house and good friends alongside. Its the typical lifestyle you would imagine and i dare say many people would like to be living themselves.
One day the calm is shattered when Don (Ben Kingsley) turns up from England to recruit Gal (Winstone) for one last job. The sort of offer where he can’t say no.
Needless to say – he doesn’t and returns to England to do the bank job with fellow crook Teddy Bass (Ian McShane… of Lovejoy fame)
Now for me, Kingsley was totally the wrong choice for this role. You will find many differing opinions about this – some will think he’s perfect, some will think he’s poor… i’m somewhere in the middle. I just find it a little bit hard to believe that he is really that ruthless a gangster, he just doesn’t pull it off.
It is directed by Jonathan Glazer who gained success from making some well polished music videos. It is a very respectable debut into full length movies.
Moaning aside, its still a very good film that i would recommend to anyone. There are some classic scenes and the script is cracking from start to finish.
