Starring: Paddy Considine, Sean Bean, Rebecca Hall, Warren Clarke

Made by Channel 4 films, the Red Riding Trilogy is an absolute triumph. The films are based on the novels of David Peace. The story focuses on the Yorkshire Police force and the corruption, brutality and murder that they inflicted during the 70’s and 80’s. Loosely based the era of the Yorkshire Ripper and the police investigating the crimes.

Three separate films, 1974, 1980, 1983 – each feature length and with its own acclaimed director in charge. Excellent direction from start to finish and whoever was the casting director deserves applause too as the performances of the actors and actresses are second to none.

Make no mistake, its not tea time viewing. Its dark and unrelenting. Not in a graphic way but an eerie uncomfortable way.

Red Riding deserves to be one of the best selling dvd boxsets this Christmas. I’m not sure it will be given its content but there are plenty of people who will appreciate this boxset for the fantastic film making that it is. I’m sure there will be some awards for it somewhere down the line. Gritty and gripping. British drama at its finest.
