Public Enemies (2009)

Starring: Jonny Depp, David Wenham, Christian Stolte

Starring Jonny Depp, Public Enemies tells the true stories of one of Americas most wanted criminals, John Dillinger. Dillinger was a well liked bank robber in the early 1930’s, famed for wanting to “steal the banks money not yours”. Although liked, Dillinger was dangerous, and the movie does very well in portraying his human side whilst also showing the careless animal that killed several police officers during his escapades.

Focusing on the relationship between Edgar Hoover (Lead Investigator) and John and his gang, Public Enemies does well to portray the violence that surrounds early crimes of the 1930’s. Regularly the characters are seen to be having shoot outs resulting in getaways from the police and FBI. Interesting is the docusoap type recording nature of some of the scenes, bringing an interesting perspective to the film.

On the whole, an interesting portrayel of Dillingers life, however I have to admit that although i found the film extremely compelling, it was also quite depressing. This is testament to the directors efforts to engage the audience into Dillinger as a person with feelings as supposed to a thug of the early ages.

A great film that must be seen once, just to understand Dillingers life.
