I expected a lot from ‘In The Loop’ as it was directed by Armando Iannucci, a man whose name may not be that familiar but his previous work will be. The most famous of which is his involvement with Steve Coogan for the production of most of the Alan Partridge work. In addition he has also contributed to other comedy shows including ‘The Day Today’ and ‘The Thick of It’.
This is a darkly written comedy about what goes on behind the scenes in government. If you like the sort of humour dished out in the TV series, ‘Have I Got News For You’ then you’ll love this film.
The story centres around the British and American governments in the build up to the Iraq war. The main character is Malcolm Tucker who plays the chief spin doctor in the cabinet. After some media blunders the Americans begin to take the idea that war is “unforseeable” as an indication that Britain are up for it. The British then become somewhat starstruck and are then along for the ride. It all seems as if it could have actually happened.
The acting throughout is top drawer and the comedy second to none. In The Loop had big expectations put upon it and i believe has not just met them but exceeded them. We need more British films like this… intelligent, poignant and hugely funny. Hats off to Iannucci for an absolute classic.
