How diverse are Bollywood Films these days

The typical Bollywood movie used to revolve around a couple chasing each other through various fields and also trees, only for the femme fatale to be just out of reach of the man. Within a three minute song, the couple would also have travelled around the world ten times and changed outfits quicker than you could say katsu curry. As strange as this sounds, this was the symbol that represents the average indian household and the close knit relationship that each marriage has instilled into it.

How has Indian Cinema evolved? Well the biggest change for me has go to be the ever increasing flesh that bollywood actresses are now displaying in the films. Although India is the land of the Karma Sutra, the female form and erotica etc is a very taboo subject which is not common place in bollywood films. The most affection a man could demonstrate with a bollywood herion is not much more than holding hands, anything more and this would be considered a blue movie. Or so would be considered back in tehe 70’s and 80’s. Nowadays, bollywood actresses such as Katrina Kaif find it common place to be dressed in a skirt and crop top, showing some cleavage and their long sexy legs.

Another big evolution for bollywood films is the diversity in storylines. Traditional indian cinema focused heavily on the institution of marriage and the bond between man and woman. A typical film plot would be very simple and viewers would pretty much know what to expect. Now, with a variety of genres being developed, Bollywood film directors understand what makes the western market grow, and are taking strong note of the successes of other industries, namely Hollywood. Thrillers, Comedies and even animated films are all present within bollywood now, and causing a big stir in India. This diversification into other genres of bollywood films is bringing about a younger, more social audience.

Bollywood Music is also diversifying immensley, with the likes of Snoop Dogg appearing on the Sing is Kinng album and acting in the video. Yes, a lot has changed, but Id be interested to see how far Bollywood films adapt before they become totally mainstream…
