This film’s been around for a few years now and it has passed me by until now. Mainly because i have avoided anything to do with Steven Spielberg after he butchered ‘A.I.’ which should have been Stanley Kubrick’s final masterpiece.
Its a shame i waited so long as its really a very good film. Its based on the true story of Frank Abagnale Jr (Leonardo Di Caprio) who was one of the most successful conmen in history.
By the age of 19 he has fraudulently made millions from cashing fake cheques all around the world. He came from a rich background and was used to leading quite a posh life until his father lost everything and his parents divorced. He then set off on his own and faked careers as a lawyer, a doctor and a Pan Am pilot.
Tom Hanks plays Carl Hanratty, the FBI guy in charge of hunting him down. The pair develop a strange sort of relationship where they know they are on opposing sides but they have a kind of mutual respect for each other.
Spielberg is a good story teller although i hate to give him any credit these days due to this love of the cheese but lets not forget he has made some classics, such as ‘Jaws’, ‘Indiana Jones’ & ‘Back to the Future’. This is a very enjoyable film and has a perfect ending, a rare treat in modern times.
