So people are calling it the film of the year. Is this title well justified?
Well, front row reviews got to go to a special screening of the film last night, with complimentary snacks, drinks, and 3d glasses. Watching the film in 3D was a little strange for me as Ive never actually seen a film in 3D before. As the curtains rolled back and the film started, I looked around the auditorium at the people around me. It looked a bit funny, everyone wearing rayban type glasses firmly pointed at the screen, but it was memorable.
As the film starts, we are introduced to a wheel chair bound marine by the name of Jake Sully. Jake’s twin brother was involved in a programme designed to learn about a new species on an alien planet called Pandora. When his brother dies, Jake is drafted in to take his place in the Avatar Programme, which allows him to put his mind into the body of an alien and go into the aliens village, learning about their culture and ways.
I wont give too much of the plot away, but I will say that this is the first film in years that had me completely enveloped and mesmerised by the story and visual effects. The film is so realistic its surreal, and some of the scenes are so vivid its as if you really are on the planet itself, experiencing the way of the Eywa (look it up) and the Na’vi people. Bright colourful forrests and creatures, all created in one superb story.
My most memorable moment from the film is probably when jake sully is first asked his name. The mother pronounces his name as JHEKH – SOO- LEEE, which I found quite amusing.
Is it all its hyped up to be? Most definately.
