On Friday 8 and Saturday 9 March 2013, the MGM classic and one of the world’s most adored musicals comes to the Royal Albert Hall for a European premiere. Loved by audiences and critics alike, the original 1952 American Musical, Singin’ In The Rain, will be presented on a large screen within the magical setting of the Royal Albert Hall, with the iconic soundtrack brought to life on stage by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra conducted by Neil Thomson, as part of its 60th birthday celebrations.
Starring Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds, it offers a lighthearted depiction of Hollywood, with the three stars portraying performers caught up in the transition from silent films to “talkies”. Audiences will be able to enjoy all the classics such as Broadway Rhythm, Should I? Make ‘Em Laugh and of course Singin’ In The Rain while iconic moments from this stunning film are shown on the big screen.
The film is frequently described as one of the best movies ever made, topping the American Film Institute’s ‘100 Years of Musicals’ list and ranking fifth in its updated list of the greatest American films ever made, testament to the relevance that the film still has on audiences 60 years later.
Singin’ in the Rain is the latest film to be announced with a live orchestra as part of a unique cinematic experience at the Royal Albert Hall. Over 50,000 people have now enjoyed sold out performances at the Hall of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Matrix, the 50th Anniversary of West Side Story, and the upcoming Disney’s Fantasia in October is next in the series. The Hall looks to provide memorable visitor experiences for all and, as a charity, these own-promoted film with live orchestra screenings form a part of its extensive public benefit remit.
