The NY Post have reported that “Spinning Around” Aussie pop star, Kylie Minogue is set to star in Bradley Rust Gray’s ‘Jack and Diane’ as “a heavily tattooed lesbian”.
The singing sensation who most recently released her eleventh studio album ‘Aphrodite’, gained acting fame by playing Charlene Robinson in ‘Neighbours’ from 1986-1988, from there she has appeared as herself in ‘The Vicar of Dibley’ and ‘Men Behaving Badly’ to name a few as well as her 2007 Christmas ‘Doctor Who’ appearance in ‘The Voyage of the Damned’ as Astrid Peth. On the big screen, Kylie is best known for her role as The Green Fairy in Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 ‘Moulin Rouge’ but also voiced Florence in the full length adaptation of ‘The Magic Roundabout’.
A source at the Post said, “Kylie does have one love scene where she kisses a girl. Her fans will be surprised to see her in this role, but her performance is good.”
‘Jack and Diane’ stars Juno Temple (‘Notes on a Scandal’, ‘Atonement’, ‘St Trinians’) and Riley Keough, granddaughter of Elvis Presley (‘The Runaways’) as two lesbian teenagers who start a whirlwind affair. The film is set to include some violent imagery and transformations (and also some werewolves) as one of the girls is due to leave. The film is due to be recorded this summer in New York City for a release some time next year.
Are we excited for Kylie’s new role? I certainly am, it will be interesting to see the reaction throughout audiences as we’ve always known Kylie as quite a clean cut character. But what off other pop stars who have moved over to the film world? Here are just a few who have successfully done it.
‘American Idol’s’, Jennifer Hudson, rose to fame in 2006’s Bill Condon film, ‘Dreamgirls’ and continues to thrive on screen as well as having a recording career. Alanis Morissette has never quite managed to return to the fame of her best selling ‘Jagged Little Pill’ but has turned up amongst some great cable television in the past few years, starring in ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’, ‘Sex and the City’ and ‘Weeds’. Finally, Will Smith, who I would put as an actor first and singer second released some great hits like ‘Just The Two of Us’ and ‘Miami’ but everyone remembers him as ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel Air’ and in recent times in ‘The Pursuit of Happiness’, ‘Hitch’ and ‘I am Legend’.
So what do you think? Can a pop star act or vice versa? Or are they just trying to have it all? Are you looking forward to ‘Jack and Diane’ and what about Kylie?
