Deadline has reported this morning that Jeremy Renner is to take over the reigns of the Bourne franchise from Matt Damon. The news comes after a long and arduous search for a leading man with the skills and thrills to do the movies justice following Damon’s timeless performance of an amnesiac agent.
The new films will follow Renner’s as yet unnamed new agent produced from a similar training process to Treadstone but this time even more deadly. Think of Terminator 2 meets The Bourne Identity.
Even though the list of names for the new projects were long Renner has emerged as the natural choice. With Oscar nominations over the past two years for his work in The Hurt Locker and The Town and a similar agenty role lined up in the upcoming Mission: Impossible Ghost-Protocol his transition to Bourne star will likely be organic.
Tony Gilroy, who wrote the screenplays for all the past Bourne films, will be directing the star and with Renner having displayed clear leading man calibre and a touch for nuanced sensitive performances it’s hopefully safe to say that the The Bourne Legacy will be as action and emotion heavy as the previous outings for the franchise.
The Bourne Legacy looks set to start production in September maybe for a late 2012 early 2013 release, stay tuned!
