It has been released today that Isla Fisher is in talks and pondering the role of Mrytle in the upcoming movie adaptation of The Great Gatsby. The character will involve herself in an adulterous affair with Tom Buchanan (uncast) who is married to Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan).
The books itself set in the roaring 1920s, around the time of prohibition, centres around themes of loss, emptiness and humanity. Fisher will have to take on a far more dramatic approach to acting than her previous comedic outings in the likes of Confessions of a Shopaholic, Wedding Crashers and the upcoming Desperados.
It’s no doubt that her casting will bring a new audience to the film as she has built up a dedicated fan base who adore her and her movies. Although it’s doubtful this fan base will be needed with just some of her co-stars certified as Leanardo Dicaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan.
Ben Affleck was signed on to play Tom Buchanan until recently but has had to step down due to scheduling issues with his own directorial project. Given Affleck’s previous efforts, such as The Town and Gone Baby Gone, I think we can safely say we’d rather see Ben behind the camera. Given the nature of the character and the period in which it’s set who’d like to see Steve Buscemi in the role of Tom Buchanan. His current work in Boardwalk Empire reveals him to be an actor quite at ease playing a good time.
The Great Gatsby is set for a release sometime in 2012 so stay tuned for more information.
