Golden Globes – 2010 Award Winners

So the Globes are over and this year there’s been quite a few surprise winners. Its not surprising that James Cameron’s Avatar picked up Best Director but Best Drama? Come on – the story is so weak and basic its been constantly compared to other simple plots like  Pocahontas, and its certainly not anywhere near being the most dramatic film of the year as it appears the HFPA seem to have geared most of their winners on simple box office success. The Hangover is another example of this, certainly not the best comedy of the year but definitely the most successful in box office receipts. Another big surprise was the best actor for comedy or musical – Robert Downey Jrs awful pop eyed performance in Sherlock Holmes was the main problem with the whole film for me, and certainly not award worthy. The other surprises were the lack of wins for Jason Reitmans Up in the Air which was expected to scoop many awards and only got one, for its screenplay. Menwhile James Camerons ex-wife Kathryn Bigelows The Hurt locker which is the talk of the town for Oscars got no wins.

Elsewhere no real big surprises in the film categories Christopher Waltz’s and Mo’nique were clear favourites for their wonderful performances as supporting actor/actress in Inglourious Basterds and Precious. Up was the most enjoyable animated film in years and Pixar’s best output to date so well deserving of the best animated film gong, whilst the White Ribbon has already picked up the foreign film at most of the award ceremonies its been nominated at so far so Michael Haneke has one to add to the cabinet.
