Bloc.2012 – Festival Preview

6th + 7th July 2012
London Pleasure Gardens
Royal Victoria Docks, London

The Venue:

Bloc was originally founded back in 2007 and until now has been held at either a Pontin’s or Butlin’s holiday camp. It was always a pleasant change from camping in a muddy field, to return home for some shelter in a nice warm chalet.

Bloc however have been a victim of their own success and have now outgrown the size of those venues. This years Bloc Festival has a new home – The Royal Victoria Docks in East London. A truly remarkable venue for an event like this. Surrounded by post-industrial derelict buildings, this is a venue like no other around.

The team behind the development of the site are the guys who create the Shangri-La late night area at Glastonbury. Clearly, things are in safe hands.

If that wasn’t enough, in addition to the main venues, there is also a boat. The MS Stubnitz!!

The Motor Ship Stubnitz is a deep-sea fishing vessel that belonged to the German Democratic Republic before the collapse of Communism. She is 80 metres in length and weighs 2,541tonnes. A team of forward-thinking artists and engineers have converted it into a moving platform for the sonic and visual arts. It’s hard to say more than that… it pretty much sells itself, and if you need any more convincing, watch the video!

The Line-Up:

With a quite a few of the big festivals being cancelled this year, Glastobury and The Big Chill to name two of them – this is your chance to explore something new. If the venue itself has not sold it to you, take a look at the line-up – it’s incredible.

Projection Mapping and visual trickery will be supplied by Florence To’s specially created video installations. At Bloc she will be using lights and projections to enhance the epic landscape of the Millenium Mills building into a 3D environment; using shadows, forms and simple abstract lines to create textures that re-define its surface and shape.

Make no mistake, this event is likely to go down in history as one of the most spectacular festivals ever put on anywhere in the world. The line-up absolutely stinks of quality from top to bottom. London certainly will not have seen anything like this before. The venue seems as if it has been waiting around for hundreds of years, just for this purpose. I know everyone doesn’t like techno, beautiful visuals, projection mapping and devastating beats but… if only Mr. Coe had let these guys choreograph the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics, maybe then we might not embarrass ourselves on the world stage. Fuck the Olympics – this is where you need to be this summer!

MORE INFO & TICKETS:
