BAFTA DEBATES The Fine Print: Reviewing the Film Policy Review
David Lean Room, BAFTA, 195 Piccadilly

Widely applauded by industry and press alike, the DCMS’ Film Policy Review sets out a vision of greater coherence and collaboration across the film industry. It’s persuasive rallying cry; together, with strong leadership, the UK industry can build on recent successes and develop a sustainable future for British film.

With the government’s response to the document expected in late March and the BFI releasing their 5 year strategy for consultation in late April, BAFTA gather key industry figures to debate whether the Policy document gives us the right road map for the future of UK film and whether the wider industry can come together to deliver the best results.

The panel will be chaired by Mike Goodridge (Editor, Screen International).

Branded: Filmmakers and Brand-Funded Content
BAFTA, 195 Piccadilly, London W1J 9LN

Filmmakers have long moved between the distinct worlds of commercial advertising and filmmaking, with advertising often seen as a way of funding film projects or subsidising the filmmaker’s less commercial work. But in the last decade the lines between those worlds have blurred. Advertisers have looked to harness filmmakers’ storytelling skills in new and varied ways – ranging from microbudget budget online commercials to long form ads in which the brand is only peripherally featured, to investing in feature films. In this event, BAFTA will explore how and why brands and filmmakers are collaborating more closely and look at the commercial, creative and ethical questions, as well as opportunities that arise.

What’s App? The Truth Behind Creating A Successful App
BAFTA, 195 Piccadilly, London W1J 9LN

The apps market has exploded over the last few years with the emergence of affordable smart phones and tablet browsers. Year on year, the apps marketplace has become ever more crowded and competitive and it has never been felt more than in the film, TV and publishing industries, where apps have revolutionised storytelling. But can this digital phenomenon really compete with, and compliment, traditional models of story telling? And if so, how are they doing this? To uncover the truth behind creating a successful app, BAFTA is delighted to welcome apps-pert, Stuart Dredge, freelance journalist (R6 Planet of the Apps, The Guardian, The Times) and editor specialising in mobile apps and mobile content who will be joined by three award winning app developers to share their experiences with us and focus on three different case studies.
