Most of us have had a vehicle breakdown when it’s least expected and more often than not it could have been avoided if we’d done some regular maintenance in advance. How many of us are left kicking ourselves about it whilst we are waiting on the hard shoulder for the recovery team to rescue us?

In just the last 2 years, Highways England have published stats that they were called out to over 170,000 breakdowns, with just under half caused by basic issues that could have been solved in advance such as running out of petrol, poor tyre maintenance and power loss.

Hollywood tends to mirror reality somewhat with many major feature films revolving around a central theme of a vehicle breakdown. In true movie fashion they are often very dramatic and can lead to all sorts of consequences, most of them bad.

Explore the graphic below and see which type of characters are most prone to breakdown, which cars are the most reliable, and we can probably all take a guess – but which movie genre is most likely for the characters to end up with a broken down vehicle? Comedy, Disaster, Thriller, Horror?

I’m sure the stats would be pretty similar the world over so maybe it’s due to the bigger budgets of the Hollywood studios but 89% of these movie breakdowns happen on American soil!

Beware the flat tyre! Films such as The Hill Have Eyes and The Rocky Horror Picture Show see their lead characters get into very sticky situations due to poor tyre maintenance.

A great way to keep on top of regular maintenance is to have a chat with the team at one of your local Halfords Autocentres. Take a look through the list in the infographic above and see if any of these breakdowns remind of you of any issues you’ve previously had. We’re not suggesting for a moment that you will be engulfed by plague of zombies or stranded on a desert highway but maybe you can learn a lesson from one of your favourite films.
