So is it just me who has been constantly getting these two teen heart throbs mixed up over the last few weeks? With Robert Pattinson being the heartthrob of Twilight sequel New Moon, out here in the UK on the 20th November and Zac Efron’s Me and Orson Welles London Premiere two days before on the 18th (but the films not out until 4 December) they are both all over the British press at the moment and I am constantly muddling over which one is which. Not being a hormonal teenage girl, personally I wouldn’t be able to tell the two apart in a line up – to me they both just look like archetypal film star hunks.
Zac Efron really struck fame gold after appearing in 2006’s High School Musical and sequels, and has now been given a few starring roles in the recent 17 Again and Richard Linklater’s upcoming Me and Orson Welles. In this film he is again the teen star (despite now being 22!) but in a period piece as its set in 1937 playing a character cast in a theatre production of Julius Caesar directed by a young Orson Welles. Meanwhile Robert Pattinson is perhaps the UK’s own version of Efron, his first major role was as Cedric Diggory in the Harry Potter franchise, but has reached similar obsessive fan status through the Twilight series of films. Like Efron he also recently did a period piece – starring as Salvador Dali in Little Ashes.
So they both have (apparently) charming good looks, are stars of blockbuster film series and both are in their early twenties, despite playing characters much younger. Both also have a musical element of their persona – Efron obviously sings in the High School Musicals and was also in the Hairspray musical film, whilst Pattinson has a single on the Twilight soundtrack. Although most of their fan bases seem to be young and teenage age, generally girls, there are also plenty of adult fans of High School Musical and Twilight, something that constantly mystifies me – while some of these people are crazy about the films many adults (incredibly including hoards of mothers who’ve obviously seen the films with their kids) also seem to be in love with these two. They even both have nicknames with Zs in – Zac Efron is ‘ZEfron’ and Robert Pattinson is ‘RPattz’.
It seems that Efron is more of the heartthrob, fans are in love with him rather than Troy Bolton, whilst the Pattinson fans are more often fans of the original bestselling Twilight books by Stephanie Meyer, and are more obsessive with his character Edward than Pattinson himself. However this Sunday a film called Robsessed gets its London Premiere on Sunday, a fan film from Revolver that is apparently made by Pattinson fans for Pattinson fans – for more info on this see – http://www.robsessed.co.uk/
