The Weather Station DVD Review

weatherstation1Two detectives have been sent to a remote weather station and outpost. The crew living there have disappeared into the fog and taken any explaination with them. This might be linked to the couple that turned up and wanted to explore a nearby cave. It could also have something to do with the Yeti that stalks around the camp looking for a good meal. Now the two have a jigsaw of bullet holes, washing machines, secret rooms and stashes of cash to unravel. This will lead them to truths and lies, death and dismay.

weatherstation2I love the genre that this film is playing on, the neo noir film. It is at once a genre about the most primal of human conditions, desire and are most complex, manipulation. Add to this a delightful merge of the conventions with a setting that is hostile, yet strange and familiar. The outside cold leads us into the inside and a surreal world of hiding spaces and cluttered rooms.  The cast are all superb and this becomes very potent in the building up of layers of tension and dynamic intrigue. The two detectives are excellent at the playing of this game. Often wrong footing you in expectation and realisation. Visually the film is also very good, with compositions that heap shallow focus and deep focus. Blurring the world and throwing your compass off. This adds to the tension. My only gripe really is that it begins with a level of confusion as to film time and space but this is small in the ultimate scheme of things.

weatherstation3The disc is lite on the ground however but the film makes up for this by being cracking in many areas. A watch that is worth your and my time.
