MRS SIDHU INVESTIGATES DVD REVIEW

Mrs. Sidhu  (Meera Syal) is a caterer for those life changing events. Weddings, Christening, New business openings, Bar and Bat mitzvahs and even murder… yes that is right murder. She loves a good crime to get her crime solving taste buds salivating. Her sleuthing gets her in the right doors and windows as it becomes an unofficial partnership with dour DCI Burton (Craig Parkinson), who might have been reluctantly accepting at first but leaps right in as they make the perfect pairing to fight crime, solve mysteries and eat lots of lovely khanna. The first season is soon to be released on DVD and Digital on 30 October.

Now the issue I have with Mrs Sidhu is what I have with a few of the Acorn crime pantheon. Its perfectly serviceable. It is fun. Has some very well plotted crimes and moments of wit and charm that will leave the viewer happy enough. However the whole series has an issue with its tone. The series never fully delivers on either being to fun or to series. Navigating the crimes with a sense that they are throw away, yet also peopling stories around them that are rather serious. So you get a feeling that it all amounts to a nothing. Now this is likely the guiding principle. The show is not supposed to be long lasting. However it feels so throw away, as to make you not want to commit to it long term. Sidhu has a dysfunctional family that we don’t care about. Burton has a private life that seems his own woes are his own making. We don’t empathise with him due to that. In the end, its a serviceable set of mysteries, with nothing in-between.
